What camera do you use?
I use a variety of different film cameras: Mamiya 645Pro, Nikon F100, Holga 120 & 120FN and Polaroid Spectra.
What is your favourite filmstock?
I love Ilford HP5 for B&W and Fuji Portra for colour. I also loved Kodak E100 VS. Though they no longer make it, I have a few rolls sitting in my refrigerator.
For the photos submitted, why are they your favourite?
‘An Cat Dubh’ is one of my favourite photos ever because it was created on a photo workshop I took to the west of Ireland in October, 2001. That trip changed my life because I hadn’t taken photos in almost 10 years and realized while I was there that photography is my passion. I haven’t stopped shooting since. This was also the first time I ever did long exposures at night.
‘Jardin Luxembourg’ was taken during a trip to Paris in preparation for a show I had in 2006 of Paris photos. Paris is one of my favourite cities in the world to photograph and I have a particular fondness for the Jardin Luxembourg because I studied at the Sorbonne during university.
‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ was taken my last winter living in Washington, DC at night after a cold spell when the canals had frozen over in Georgetown. I wore a number of layers, but doing long exposures in those temperatures was brutal. However, I got a great photo! (Fuji Velvia 100).
‘Sunset, Capitol Hill’ was taken soon after I moved to Seattle on my walk home from work. It was being at the right place, right time when I captured this stunning light. One of the many reasons I often carry my Holga with me on my walks.
